Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the option to challenge particular calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
